I'm really into learning piano

hi everyone, it has been a loooooong time since I wrote my last post.
lately I'm really into music, especially piano. Since my friend, ifa, has an unused quite broken keyboard at her house, so I have it fixed, and.... I can learn piano! Furthermore, I have a very good friend with me, which is pdf of "Piano for Dummies"!!! Really helps a lot. If you are on the same boat, and you are really eager to learn piano, you may download the pdf here http://www.ziddu.com/download/12973758/Wiley---Piano-For-Dummies--2009-.pdf.html

I started wanting to learn piano since I watched one episode of Detective Conan where a bethoven piece, piano sonata no.14 which is widely known as the first movement of Moonlight sonata, became the focus of the case. I started to fall in love with that song.

if you want to listen to the song, here is the link http://www.ziddu.com/download/12974424/bethoven-moonlightsonata.mp3.html

the song is kind of dark. it releases dark emotion that everyone has inside. I always dream to play the song by my own fingers. And years after that finally it comes true!!! although I'm still learning the left hand part, difficult though, I already master the right hand part. Well, I can't play very well, yet I'm satisfied to be able to play the piece that I like.

Beside Moonlight sonata, I also love to listen to Pathetique, another Bethoven's piano sonata, piano sonata no.8. This song is extremely the opposite of moonlight sonata. Although both of them are supposed to be played calmly, pathetique sounds brighter. it is so soft and soul healing. if you want to compare them you can follow this link http://www.ziddu.com/download/12974424/bethoven-moonlightsonata.mp3.html

I'm learning to play this song too. But I got stuck in the transcription of the music sheet. Did I told you before? I can't read music score!!! So how do I learn Moonlight? I convert alllll the music notes into numbers. Hwakakakakaka...

Beside those two, recently I learn two other song. The first is the song entitled Falling slowly from the movie once. this is a nice song!!! This is the link if you want to listen to it http://www.ziddu.com/download/12974425/once-FallingSlowly.mp3.html

The second is a background music of a game .hack//gu entitled Swaying emotion, another dark and gloomy song khekekeke. But this song is nice. The musics of .hack//'s series are often used in Indonesia's variety shows. While adventure shows with similar theme like Bolang use musics from games like Legend of Manna, Final Fantasy, Chrono Cross, and others. The link of Swaying emotion is here http://www.ziddu.com/download/12975433/29-SwayingEmotions.mp3.html

Well if you also fall in love withe those songs, and you want to play them in your keyboard or piano, here are the links.

My Happiness

I am super happy that the students write very well [or maybe I should say vuuuery well?~Javanese English mode: on]
It seems that I can write more when I give comments rather than when I have to post something.
Now I start to confuse of what to write.
but that's okay one day after we keep these things going on, I and also you guys will be able to write in English without any trouble.... Allah blesses us...
Each of you has written interesting things. You have organize it really well. I found several mistakes, but never mind. never let the mistakes burden you to write more. What you did in your first writing really makes me moved, but I feel sorry for one person, Mrs Wiwik......
I'm sorry maam, last night I was going to send you a message that I was free in the evening. but then on the way back to Jember from Situbondo, Ms fitri asked me to visit Ms Pipit who is currently hospitalized in Bina Sehat. If you want to visit her, the room is D7. she does need friends to chat. I wonder that being only able to lay down doing nothing is really a torture for her [especially in a hospital]. this is the real torture jroel!

May Allah give us health both our physic and our mind. Amin

english classroom games part 1

Someone asked me a question, "what kind of English game you can apply for junior high level when the class you handle is quite big?"

Well this is a pretty common question for teachers who do want their students to have a fun English learning.

I do appreciate this kind of teacher.
They do want the students to improve their skills, not only merely 'clean out' the materials from the book without, I repeat,  WITHOUT the students getting the knowledge of what they are learning.
I hope you're not one of the last mentioned.

We have lots of games that we can apply both in small and large classes.
What you need is only to fit the condition of your class with the rule of the game.
For large classes you may divide your class into groups.
It is better not to have too many people in a group. The ideal number is 4 to 6.
Having too many people in a group will not make the game effective since you'll lose control on big groups.
If the students gather in a big group, they tend to chit chat and not following the instructions.

Well these are the games that I usually apply in my classes.

1. WORD SHOPPING or you may call it letter shopping

This game is mainly for vocabularies.
But you can modify this into listening practice.
This game is more like hangman.
If you have no idea of what hangman is, please visit this web en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hangman_(game)
Yah, hangman is similar to a game called hangaroo. It is pretty much famous. I don't think you don't know.
Actually, I don't quite like the idea of hangman. For heaven's sake, why should you be hanged for just not being able to guess the word right?

And... word shopping works like that game I mentioned previously.
The difference is only WE GIVE CLUES TO THEM and THEY HAVE TO PAY for the letter they guess.

These are the sequences:
  • Give each student/group $100 [fake money of course. it's fake. Don't worry]
  • Draw a table consists of two rows. First row will be the name of the students/ name of the groups. Second row will be the amount of money that they have got. The number of the column will be the number of the students/ groups.
  • Think of a word that you want the students to guess. For example word ‘HOUSE’. Then draw lines and numbers of the letters like this
  • Give clues to the students. The first chance will go to the first student/group. For instance, clue 1. This is a building.
  • Let your first student/group answer. The student can either directly answer all the letters or guess per letter. Each letter that the student guesses will cost him $5. He has to pay whether the letter is right or wrong.
  • When the student guesses the letter wrong, e.g. ‘A’ for third letter. Then put it this way.
  • When the student guesses the letter right but the position is wrong, e.g. ‘U’ for two. Then put it this way so that the students will have track of the letters they have guessed.

  • Each student/group has unlimited chances to guess when it comes to their turn, but the clue is only one per student/group. When they give up, they may pass, but a pass without guessing even a single letter is strictly forbidden. If this is ignored, students will tend to pass without guessing so that their money will stand still [huh, stingy students].
  • The student/group who completes the word is the one who gets the prize money. Each letter worth $10. So for that word above they will get $50 added to their account [okay, okay. I know this isn’t fair for other students/groups that have spent lots of their money, but it’s a game of tactic, man. Tactic].

Like what I said, this game is for the purpose of enhancing vocabularies. The origin of this game doesn’t have clues with it. So I modify it myself in order to make my students unconsciously learning to listen sentences in English. When stating the clues do not use confusing or difficult language for beginners unless you want them to hate this game.
That’s the gist of it.
If you want to make modifications in several places, that will be great. Let me know! So we can share thoughts.

My first entri

Although lots of people have tried this kind of blogging stuff hundred yearssss agoooo, I have to admit that this is my first time getting in touch with something like this.

I was one of those participants who joined a call seminar for English teacher in my town, and blogging is one method that the speakers introduced us to.

I'm crazy for the blogging teaching method that they introduced us to. That's why I want to try this out!

Well, I actually start this blog for the purpose of English learning.
I just want to realize a new knowledge that I just got from the seminar.
I'd like to prove that THIS IS HIGHLY POSSIBLE to make my students learn English outside the classroom without they even realize that they are learning!
Amazing, isn't it?

Soooooo I'm going to ask the students to create their blog accounts.
For starter I'm not going to make this too elaborate.
I'll just ask each student to post 100 to 150 words about what happen to them during 2 weeks in their blog, and during those weeks each student has to give comment to at least two of his classmates, and the comments will be about correcting grammar of their friends' post.
This way they may start the discussion. by using English of course.

They don't need to be 100% perfect for their first posts.
what they need is ONLY TO WRITE.
And the correction will be made by their friends.

Well students tend to find it hard to notice their own mistakes. by asking their friends to correct the mistakes, they themselves create a peer teaching team! and they do not realize that.

The posts can be anything.
Really anything.
Well, as long as they do not violate the norms.

if the students have got used to this method, I will shorten the time to one week.

and we'll see whether this method works for Indonesian students or not. ^__^
